Growth Accelerator Programme-pushing the business boundaries

When local business man and entrepreneur Colin Wright of Britannia Safety and Training decided the time was right to look at longer term planning for the business he turned to the Growth Accelerator programme for advice and support.

Setting ambitious growth targets for the business over a period of three years Colin set about appraising the current business format, and with the help of Becky Moore, Britannia’s Growth Accelerator representative, appraised the working practices of the company and set targets to grow the business by 100% and by 2015.

During the planning process Colin and his team looked closely at the services they offered and the training capacity of the business, including the premises, staff and the competition. Immediately two accreditations in the construction industry were recognised as not easy to access both in the immediate area and further afield. Both represented potentially strong growth prospects for the business and with little competition in the delivery of them.

Being one of only a few independent training providers with purpose built premises in the region, setting up the requirements for gaining the two specialist accreditations made sense and worked in well with the current training centre, whilst industry health and safety regulations ensure a constant flow of customers requiring places on courses.

Following planning and implementation of business needs to deliver specialist courses, Britannia Training has become the first independent training centre in East Anglia to receive accredited recognition for the Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme for inspection.

The Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme (CISRS) has been the industry recognised scaffold training scheme for over 30 years. It is the preferred scaffolding qualification of all the major organisations including CSCS, NASC, HSE, UKCG, T&G, UCATT and the largest scaffold systems manufacturers.

Whilst many construction companies are skilled at the erection of scaffolding on site, health and safety requirements require an independent inspection of any complex scaffolding build to justify health and safety legislation.

The main reason why some scaffolds are erected unsafely is due to lack of training. Contractors need to recognise the risk associated with poorly erected systems and the CISRS scheme will prevent non-skilled scaffolders erecting dangerous scaffolds. Any competent business in the construction industry will identify the benefits of an individual achieving the accreditation.

The two day course will equip the attendee with significant knowledge and understanding of the erection and maintenance of scaffolds, different techniques to cover all situations and the importance of surveying and planning before getting started – all essential to cover all health and safety aspects of the project being carried out.

Colin Wright, Managing Director of Britannia Training. “ the CISRS inspection is a necessity to cover health and safety requirements and should be seen as a safe and second opinion, ensuring the safety of the user on a construction project. We are pleased and proud to offer, through our investment in continuous development of Britannia services, our latest CISRS accreditation which gives anyone needing the service the option of a local provider, fully accreditated and with purpose built training facilities at the training centre.”

Britannia’s third achievement is slightly more personal whilst in keeping with business planning on the Growth Accelerator Programme. Managing Director Colin Wright has been appointed by IPAF as an examiner and mentoring instructors new to the industry. Colin joins a select few across the UK who now tests new instructors, ensuring HSE, IPAF and international standard to ISO 18878 is adhered to.
