Helen and Erica were inspired to start their picnic-box business when they were looking at catering ideas for their joint Birthday party.
‘With around 120 people to feed at our party we wanted something a bit different from the norm, something more in keeping with the occasion. We had hired a ceilidh band, and with the theme being along traditional country dancing, we finally decided on picnic boxes for everyone to share. Working on a limited budget, we set about gathering the best quality food for the best prices we could find, as well as making some of items ourselves.
We loved the idea of making the picnic-boxes as ‘eco-friendly’ as possible, so we decided on recyclable materials such as paper bags for bread, tomatoes, grapes and sweet treats, as well as plates and bamboo cutlery. All the food items were put into forty-two vegetable boxes gleaned from the ever-helpful Lidl store, with each box holding enough to feed between four and six people. The finishing touches came in the shape of a pastel coloured tablecloth and lantern in each box, so once the boxes were distributed we watched as the dance hall was transformed with people getting together to share boxes with their friends and neighbours, spreading the cloths, lighting the lanterns and unpacking the food. It was such a lovely sight, and created a wonderful atmosphere.
The feed-back we received was so overwhelmingly positive that we began to look at the possibility of turning our idea into a business, and once the decision was made, we came up with lots of ideas for personalised picnic boxes to suit any event and any budget, from cosy intimate picnics for two, to lavish parties and everything in-between – the possibilities are endless! Above all we want to retain our original ethos of recycling, re-using and good food for sharing. The beauty of our picnics is that they’re not just for sunny Summer days, but all year round for every occasion.’
