The new Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2007 (CDM) came into effect in April 2007. It is a requirement that all employers of construction workers ensure that they are competent in a range of health and safety issues, so receiving training on a regular basis is essential.

The Site Manager Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is a five day course that can be taken on a 1 day a week attendance or as a 5 day block attendance. The overall objective of the SMSTS course is to develop awareness and competence to manage safely and effectively in compliance with both company, policy and construction industry best practice.

If a certificate has expired, delegates will need to attend a 2 day SMSTS Refresher Course, which will then extend the certificate for another five years. There is a 6 month window of opportunity either side of the expiry date in which to re-qualify.
The Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) is a 2 day course that provides an introduction to health and safety, welfare and environmental issues for those requiring an understanding of their legal responsibilities that are relevant to their work activities and will provide a sound knowledge base to enable them to give valuable assistance in safely managing a construction site.

The Health and Safety Awareness Course (1 day) provides a practical summary of health and safety, welfare and environmental issues identifying individual responsibilities for looking after themselves and others, what the employer duties are and what should be done if they think anyones health and safety is being put at risk.
